AGES 15+
This class is designed for those who have done a little backpacking, or perhaps have done some backpacking in the distant past, but need to refresh or hone their skills. Ideally, you already know the basics about gear, food, shelter and safety management, and have set up a campsite and followed a map while on a route. Now you’re ready to do more of the actual planning: select a destination; plot your route on a map; plan for your water sources; and go even deeper into the wilderness. This class will guide you through this in-depth process and you’ll learn even more about gear and strategy options, as well as how to survive common emergencies in the wilderness. The class will plan their own backpack trip for the week of August 10-16, with location and number of days determined by the class. We’ll travel safely and efficiently through a variety of ecological zones and plant communities; you’ll experience the grandeur and beauty of the sub-alpine environment on a deeply personal level. The class will help prepare you to begin planning and executing real wilderness backpacking trips on your own.
