FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On or about January 5th, 2026, the district was notified by a Park Maintenance employee that some doors at the facility were open with exposed wires and electrical ground boxes were open.

After investigation by GVRD personnel and electrical contractors it was determined there was extensive wire theft and vandalism damage to the electrical distribution equipment, tampered PG&E facilities, cut/broken locks, and broken doors.

The damage is so extensive it will require replacement of the following items:

1.    Main electrical service switchgear

2.    Building electrical distribution equipment

3.    Field lighting controls

4.    Field lighting conduits and wiring

5.    Field lighting distribution equipment (at the poles)

6.    PGE facilities and distribution equipment

7.    Building Damages (doors, locks, walls)

The current light poles will also need to be inspected for structural integrity.

It was also determined that the PG&E facilities that were damaged will need full replacement and upgrades to comply with current utility codes. All these repairs will require extensive engineering and planning services to restore power safely and to meet new codes. Due to utility regulations the costs associated with the upgrades are the responsibility of GVRD.

The age of the electrical distribution equipment, poles, and lights is currently unknown. It is estimated the system is over 50 years old based on the type of equipment and the conductors used. This is a conservative estimate and most of the equipment is found to be at the end of its useful life.

A positive note is that the field will still be available for day games. The district is exploring options to restore the lights and facility operation as soon as fiscally and safely possible. Costs could range from just under $1 million to over $1 million. Any information regarding the theft and damage to Wilson Park is greatly appreciated.
